The Ministry of Finance has revealed that the Maldivian government collected just 3.6 percent of its projected foreign grants for 2025 during the first five months of the year.
The government aims to secure MVR 2.6 billion in foreign grants this year, but by the end of May, it had received only MVR 94 million. This marks a shortfall of MVR 143.7 million compared to the same period in 2024, when the government had received MVR 237.7 million. With just seven months remaining, the state still needs to secure nearly MVR 2.5 billion to meet its annual grant target.
Despite the grant deficit, total government revenue for the year so far has reached MVR 14.9 billion. Tax income continues to dominate, accounting for 77.8 percent of total revenue. As of last week, the government had collected MVR 11.6 billion in tax revenue—an increase of MVR 151.3 million compared to the same period last year.
Government expenditure, meanwhile, stood at MVR 13.7 billion by the review date, reflecting a 17.9 percent decrease year-on-year. Recurrent spending dropped by 3.8 percent, while capital expenditure saw a more dramatic decline of 64.2 percent.
