The Government of Maldives is expediting efforts to complete the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) ahead of its original timeline, according to the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen. The announcement was made in the Minister’s message marking International Civil Aviation Day.
Highlighting the evolution of civil aviation as an engine for economic and social growth, Minister Ameen emphasised that the Maldives has kept pace with global advancements in aviation. In line with the government’s vision, the Minister noted that local airlines are expanding operations with fleet enhancements, including the national carrier Maldivian’s upcoming introduction of its first wide-body aircraft and the launch of new international routes.
Minister Ameen acknowledged the progress of the new international terminal at VIA but revealed that the government is pushing to accelerate its completion. Once operational, the terminal is expected to significantly increase the capacity and frequency of flights by both domestic and international airlines, improving services for passengers.
The Minister also announced plans to reintroduce helicopter operations in the Maldives. The service will enhance tourist transport between resorts and airports, facilitate medical evacuations, and enable night flights to regions without domestic airports.
The VIA operator, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), had previously indicated that the new terminal would be operational by mid-2025. The accelerated schedule aims to open the facility even earlier, further aligning with the government’s vision to modernise the nation’s aviation infrastructure.
Additionally, Minister Ameen shared that the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is scheduled to audit the Maldives’ compliance with international aviation standards in mid-2025. He expressed confidence in the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority’s readiness and efforts under the government’s guidance to achieve a successful outcome.
These developments reflect the government’s commitment to advancing the Maldives’ aviation sector, reinforcing its role in driving economic growth and improving connectivity across the island nation.
