Gov’t Announces Completion of Muli Airport Following Successful Test Flight

The government has announced the successful completion of Muli Airport in Meemu Atoll, with a test flight landing at the new facility on Friday, marking a major milestone for the long-anticipated project.

Constructed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the airport features a 1,200-metre-long and 30-metre-wide runway, designed for domestic air travel. A Maldivian aircraft landed at the site as part of the test flight operations, confirming the readiness of the infrastructure. The project, which began in 2022, was completed over a three-year period at a total cost of MVR 221 million.

The development of Muli Airport had been in the works for some time. Initially handed over to MTCC during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the project was launched with a budget of MVR 212 million. The original plans included not only the runway but also a terminal building and other essential facilities necessary for a fully functioning domestic airport.

However, progress was hampered by budget constraints, resulting in delays that pushed back the expected timeline for completion. When the current administration led by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, efforts were renewed to finalise the project, culminating in the successful test flight last week.

The completion of Muli Airport is expected to enhance connectivity for the residents of Meemu Atoll and provide new opportunities for travellers seeking to explore the region.
