Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has expressed optimism about completing the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) by September.
In a recent address on PSM News, Minister Saeed underscored the government’s commitment to advancing the airport’s developmental agenda. He acknowledged the project’s initiation under the administration of former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom but lamented its neglect in subsequent years, citing delays and escalating costs.
Efforts are underway to accelerate progress, with ongoing discussions with contractors and a focus on expediting the terminal’s development. Minister Saeed highlighted the recent completion and operationalization of the cargo terminal and preparations for the forthcoming fuel farm operations.
Highlighting President Muizzu’s directive to complete the passenger terminal before the peak season, Minister Saeed affirmed that with sustained momentum, this target is within reach. The new terminal aims to significantly increase capacity from 1.5 million to seven million passengers annually.
The modern terminal, which will span an expansive 78,000 square meters, will integrate cutting-edge technologies, including aero-boarding bridges and advanced baggage handling systems. Addressing space constraints, it will feature a range of amenities such as F&B outlets, retail spaces, lounges, and other passenger facilities.
