Efforts are underway to ease emerging supply pressures in the Maldives, as authorities move to accelerate the shipment of goods currently delayed within regional logistics networks.
Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed said work is in progress to expedite the arrival of 80 containers, part of a wider backlog affecting cargo movements between the Maldives and Colombo. Around 4,200 containers have been delayed, raising concerns about the availability of certain items in the domestic market.
The government has prioritised essential commodities in its response, with particular attention given to sunflower oil and milk. The minister indicated that these items were identified following requests from the market and are being fast-tracked to ensure continued availability.
He also noted that these goods form part of a broader list of essential items, with ongoing efforts focused on maintaining stable supply levels and reducing the risk of shortages.
The minister pointed to external pressures affecting supply chains, citing disruptions linked to recent geopolitical developments involving Iran. These developments have affected international transportation networks and contributed to delays in cargo movement.
Authorities are continuing to coordinate with relevant agencies, including counterparts in Sri Lanka, to manage the situation and support the steady flow of goods into the Maldives.
