The Minister of Tourism, Ibrahim Faisal, has announced the upcoming development of Maarandhoo, Gaafu Alif Atoll, into a tourist resort. The announcement follows a visit by the Minister to oversee progress on the island.
Development on Maarandhoo originally commenced in 2016 under a Chinese company, progressing significantly until pausing in 2019. Minister Faisal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge of bringing the resort project to fruition within two years.
To ensure this goal, the Ministry has formed a dedicated committee to supervise the development process. Minister Faisal expressed a sense of urgency, stating that discussions are being held with contractors to accelerate procedures and that adjustments to existing plans will be made if needed to avoid delays.
The government’s focus is on driving prosperity for Gaafu Alif Atoll residents within the next five years, prioritizing growth in tourism revenues and the promotion of tourism initiatives.
