HDC Moves to Address Delays in Reclamation Projects with New Dredgers

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced plans to deploy three additional dredgers in October to accelerate ongoing land reclamation and dredging works across the Malé region.

According to HDC, the new equipment includes two 45,000-tonne hopper dredgers and one 11,000-tonne hopper dredger. The corporation said the move is intended to ensure continuity of projects and address delays and interruptions that have drawn public concern in recent months.

Reclamation is currently underway at several key sites, including Hulhumalé Phase 3, Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Falhu, Uthuru Thila Falhu, and Rasmale’. Among these, the Rasmale’ reclamation is the largest of its kind in the region and is a central part of the government’s strategy to expand housing and urban development.

The government has pledged to develop 65,000 housing units, including flats and land plots, once reclamation works are completed. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has repeatedly highlighted housing as a national priority, describing his administration as pursuing a “golden age of housing.”

HDC added that it is working closely with relevant authorities to resolve challenges that could affect progress and reaffirmed its commitment to completing the projects at an accelerated pace.
