HDC’s Mauroof Jameel Steps Down Six Months into Role

Mohamed Mauroof Jameel has resigned from his post as Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), just six months after taking over the role. His resignation comes during an ongoing criminal investigation into a high-profile corruption case linked to the allocation of land and housing in Hulhumalé.

Mauroof, who played a significant role in the early development of HDC and previously served as Minister of Construction and Public Infrastructure, was reappointed as managing director on 22 December 2024. His return to HDC came in the aftermath of a scandal that saw the dismissal of his predecessor, Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed.

The case, which remains under investigation by the police and the Anti-Corruption Commission, centres on leaked documents indicating that land plots were awarded under the ‘Binveriya’ housing scheme to individuals not on the official recipient list published in 2023. Among them was the former managing director’s brother, Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, who was later removed from his post at Male’ Water and Sewerage Company.

Mauroof had earlier informed senior HDC officials of his plans to retire in August, and the news became public earlier in July. In comments confirmed to local media, he stated that his appointment was never intended to be long term but driven by a desire to help achieve specific goals. However, he reportedly resigned after being asked to step down by the Privatisation and Corporatisation Board (PCB), suggesting that his exit may have been prompted by broader leadership changes across state-owned enterprises.

Although Mauroof has stepped down from the top position, he has expressed interest in continuing to contribute to the development of Hulhumalé in an advisory capacity. Known for his work in urban planning and architectural heritage, Mauroof has also held senior roles at the Housing Development Finance Corporation and led the Hulhumalé Development Unit prior to HDC’s formal establishment.

No further details have been disclosed regarding the circumstances of his resignation or his potential future role at the corporation.
