Historic Expansion: Maldivian Introduces Airbus A330-200 to Fleet

Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, inaugurated its first wide-body operations with the arrival of an Airbus A330-200 at Velana International Airport. This milestone marks a significant expansion in the airline’s 25-year history, enhancing its ability to connect the Maldives with international markets and strengthen the tourism sector.

The Airbus A330-200 introduces three cabin classes—Business, Premium Economy, and Economy—providing seating for 264 passengers. Its advanced capabilities will enable the launch of direct flights to major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu, with further plans to expand routes to Europe and South Africa. This addition enhances the airline’s capacity to serve long-haul destinations, meeting growing travel demand.

Island Aviation Services’ Managing Director, Ibrahim Iyas, described the new aircraft as a major step forward, stating, “With the introduction of our very first wide-body aircraft, we are now poised to expand our international flight capacity, open new routes, and connect the Maldives to long-haul destinations. This transformative step will not only strengthen our position as a global airline but also play a pivotal role in boosting the Maldives’ tourism sector by making our islands more accessible to travellers from around the world.”

President Mohamed Muizzu, speaking at the ceremony, emphasised that the wide-body aircraft marks the first step in fulfilling a key promise of his administration. He announced that a second wide-body aircraft will join the fleet in October, further expanding Maldivian’s operations.

“This is just the beginning,” the President remarked. “The second wide-body aircraft will begin flying in October, and with these developments, we aim to elevate the tourism and aviation industries, which will significantly impact the nation’s economy.”

He also highlighted broader developments at Velana International Airport, noting that a new terminal will open this year to enhance passenger experiences and increase the airport’s capacity. “MACL will cross many stages in a short period of time,” he said. “This is the year of development. We are committed to bringing positive change to all sectors, whether in the economy, structural development, or social progress. Our goal is to achieve stability, growth, and an environmentally sustainable future for our nation.”

The celebrations featured an airshow showcasing Maldivian’s fleet, visible from Malé and Hulhumalé. The event also launched a photo and videography competition, offering prizes such as 5-star resort stays and flight tickets. Additionally, a public festival, “Maldivian Haveeree Ufaa,” is scheduled for 11th January, featuring interactive exhibits and activities to engage the community and celebrate the airline’s achievements.

The introduction of the Airbus A330-200 and the upcoming arrival of the second wide-body aircraft mark a transformative chapter for Maldivian, as the airline expands its global reach and plays a critical role in supporting the Maldives’ tourism-driven economy.
