Huraa Island Council Opens 25 Reclaimed Land Plots for Guesthouse Development

Huraa Island Council has announced the allocation of 25 plots from newly reclaimed land for lease to support guesthouse development, as part of efforts to expand tourism-related economic activity on the island.

According to the council, eight of the plots have been reserved for residents of Huraa, while the remaining 17 plots will be open for lease to the general public. Each plot measures 4,000 square feet and will be leased for a period of 50 years.

Speaking to state media, Easa Ahmed, Chairperson of Huraa Island Council, said the leasing process will be carried out in line with regulations and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment. He also noted that FENAKA Corporation Limited is undertaking preparations to extend water and electricity services to the reclaimed area.

For plots designated for island residents, bidding documents are priced at MVR 10,000, with submissions due by 11 February at 12:30 hrs. A pre-bid meeting for interested residents is scheduled for 5 February at 10:00 hrs at the Huraa Council’s Huravee Wing.

Bidding documents for the 17 plots open to the public are priced at MVR 25,000 and will be available until 12 February at 12:30 hrs.

Huraa has developed into a well-established local tourism destination with a growing number of guesthouses. Census data indicates that the island’s population, including expatriate workers, stands at 1,654. The council said the release of these new plots is expected to contribute to local economic activity and further support the island’s tourism sector.
