The Fisheries Complex being developed in HA. Ihavandhoo is expected to generate 150 jobs and enhance the Maldivian fishing industry, according to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Speaking to the island’s residents, the President stated that the project, which is set to begin construction in May, will be completed within 18 months.
With a total investment of MVR 474 million, the complex will include a 1,000-tonne cold storage facility and a 50-tonne brine freezing capacity, ensuring greater efficiency in fish processing and storage. Additionally, a jetty and harbour with three fish landing points will be constructed to facilitate unloading, further improving logistical operations for the industry.
President Muizzu described the project as an important step in strengthening the fisheries sector, a key contributor to the national economy. He emphasised that his administration remains committed to addressing economic needs and ensuring that state-led initiatives directly benefit communities reliant on the industry.
In addition to the fisheries development, the President announced that 200 housing units will be built in Ihavandhoo under the government’s housing initiative, highlighting the administration’s efforts to improve living standards alongside economic expansion.
Ahead of the meeting, President Muizzu participated in the foundation-laying ceremonies for a new Police Station and the new Council Secretariat building in Ihavandhoo, reinforcing the government’s broader infrastructure development efforts in the region.
The Fisheries Complex is positioned as a major infrastructure investment aimed at increasing the capacity and efficiency of the fishing industry, providing employment, and strengthening the economic foundations of the sector.
