India is engaged in discussions with the Maldives government to assist in promoting the island nation’s fisheries sector, according to Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian
The Maldivian government recently established the Maldives Fisheries and Ocean Resources Marketing and Promotion Limited (MFORMP) to enhance the country’s fisheries industry and expand its presence in international markets. The company aims to promote Maldivian fish products, including those from aquaculture and mariculture, by developing a distinct brand for local fisheries and advertising it both domestically and globally.
Speaking at the inauguration of an ice plant in Gemanafushi, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, the Indian High Commissioner noted that discussions had taken place with Maldivian authorities on strengthening ties between fish export companies in both countries. India’s Marine Products Export Development Agency in Cochin is expected to play a role in facilitating collaboration with MFORMP to help develop the Maldives’ fisheries sector.
India’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ fisheries sector coincides with its ongoing development of fish factories across six regions of the country. These initiatives align with broader efforts to assist the Maldivian government in strengthening the industry and improving access to global markets.
MFORMP has also outlined plans to promote Maldivian fish products at global fisheries fairs and address challenges in exporting to international markets.
