The Government of Japan has officially handed over equipment worth approximately USD 5.4 million to support the Maldives in strengthening its waste management operations, marking another step in the bilateral partnership between the two countries.
At a ceremony held in Malé, the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Her Excellency Ishigami Rumiko, handed over the equipment to the Minister of Tourism and Environment, His Excellency Thoriq Ibrahim. The items include three glass crushers, a wheel loader, and three compactor trucks.
The handover forms part of a broader Economic and Social Development Programme funded by the Japanese Government, under an agreement signed in December 2022. The programme, with a total budget of 700 million Japanese Yen (approximately USD 5.4 million), is designed to support sustainable development initiatives in the Maldives.
The newly provided equipment is expected to bolster operations at regional waste management facilities and improve the logistics of transporting waste for final treatment. Officials have said the support will contribute to building an integrated, climate-responsive national waste management system.
Japan’s commitment to environmental cooperation with the Maldives remains strong. This project is seen as a continuation of longstanding support aimed at protecting the natural environment and promoting long-term prosperity in the island nation.
