The Japanese Government has pledged a grant of USD 73,538 (equivalent to 1.13 million Maldivian Rufiyya) to the Society for Health Education (SHE). This donation falls under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme. The grant will facilitate the enhancement of clinical diagnostics and reproductive health services in Malé.
A formal Grant Contract was signed on March 4th, 2024, by Her Excellency Mrs. TAKEUCHI Midori, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and Ms. Iyasha Leena, Chief Executive Officer of SHE.
The funding will primarily be used to procure 10 vital pieces of clinical equipment and supplies. This will allow SHE to upgrade its thalassemia and diagnostic laboratory significantly, incorporating advanced gene sequencing technology. Additionally, the grant will enable SHE to introduce scan services for its in-house family planning clinic and outreach initiatives.
The GGP is an integral component of Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) program in the Maldives. Since its inception in 1996, the GGP has supported grassroots development projects across sectors like education, environment, health, transportation, and energy, fostering sustainable advancement within the Maldives.
