Minister Saeed: Port Network Expansion Key to Economic Decentralisation

Economic Development and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a nationwide expansion of commercial port infrastructure, signalling that the development of Kulhudhuffushi City Commercial Port is just one part of a broader strategy to reshape the Maldives’ logistics landscape.

Speaking at a signing ceremony held on Monday to formalise the Kulhudhuffushi port expansion agreement with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), the Minister said significant technical work is already underway at the northern port in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledges. He also confirmed that discussions have been held on how best to maximise the economic value of the port for the region.

The Kulhudhuffushi City Commercial Port is being developed in phases as a logistics hub for Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, and Noonu atolls. Plans include expanding harbour capacity, upgrading cargo handling systems, and introducing secure storage facilities for both general goods and perishables. According to officials, this will improve food security, lower logistical costs, and enhance delivery efficiency across the northern atolls.

But Minister Saeed made clear that the government’s vision extends beyond a single project. In his remarks, he said MPL is working towards a broader logistics network in accordance with state policy, with active plans for a commercial port in Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu Atoll and further development of existing ports in Laamu and Seenu Atolls. Discussions are also ongoing to redevelop the port in Maamigili, Alif Dhaalu Atoll.

He described these initiatives as part of a phased infrastructure strategy to decentralise economic activity and lay the groundwork for a more resilient national supply chain. By connecting ports from north to south, the government aims to establish a scheduled freight network that reduces import costs and supports local commerce.

The agreement signed on Monday between MPL and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade marks the official launch of the Kulhudhuffushi project. It was signed by MPL CEO Mohamed Rishwan and Minister Saeed at a ceremony held in the capital.

Officials from both agencies noted that the project represents a major milestone in efforts to transform maritime trade in the Maldives, while also helping to drive down consumer prices and create new economic opportunities.
