Physical works have begun on the Vihafaru airport development in South Miladhunmadulu Atoll, with land reclamation commencing at the project site.
President Mohamed Muizzu attended the start of reclamation works on Sunday afternoon. The project was first announced through a Presidential Decree in 2024, and during a visit to the atoll in July last year, the President stated that construction activities were expected to begin in early 2026.
According to officials, the project involves the reclamation of more than 40 hectares of land, which will be raised to approximately 1.6 metres above sea level once completed. The reclaimed area is intended to support the development of a new domestic airport at Vihafaru.
The Government has previously indicated that an additional airport in South Miladhunmadulu is being considered to improve access for islands such as Hulhudhoo, Fodhdhoo, and Velidhoo, alongside the existing airport at Maafaru. The proposed airport is expected to play a role in supporting regional connectivity and tourism activity, though detailed timelines for subsequent construction phases have not yet been disclosed.
The commencement of land reclamation was marked by a joint inauguration by Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed and Maldives Airports Company Limited Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef. Following the ceremony, the President and accompanying officials inspected the project site.
