Ibrahim Shiuree, the CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives), has articulated the Maldives’ ambition to re-establish India as one of its top three tourism markets. This initiative follows a previous diplomatic dispute that had adversely affected Indian tourist arrivals.
In an interview with The Indian Express, Shiuree highlighted the Maldives’ renewed efforts to engage with the Indian market through the launch of the “Welcome India” initiative. This initiative features a series of roadshows in major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, spearheaded by Maldives Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal during his six-day visit to India.
Currently, India ranks sixth among the top ten markets for the Maldives, with China occupying the top position. As of late July 2024, 71,381 Indian travellers have visited the Maldives, representing 6.1% of the total tourist market share. The Maldives aims to increase this figure and restore India to one of the top three markets.
To achieve this goal, the Maldives is utilising a data-driven approach to implement various promotional strategies, focusing on accommodations, services, and unique selling points. Additionally, the country is positioning itself as a year-round destination through strategic campaigns and attractive offers, highlighting its affordability and appeal as a short-haul destination for Indian travellers.
In terms of connectivity, five airlines currently operate multiple weekly flights between India and the Maldives. The Maldives is actively exploring opportunities to enhance flight connectivity by introducing additional direct flights from more Indian cities to various regions of the Maldives.
Shiuree also emphasised the reciprocal nature of tourism between the Maldives and India, noting that many Maldivians travel to Indian cities for medical tourism, leisure, and shopping.
“The aim is not only to attract Indian tourists to the Maldives but also to strengthen ties and promote reciprocal tourism between the two countries,” Shiuree said.
With concerted efforts and strategic initiatives, the Maldives is determined to re-establish India as one of its top tourism markets, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship in the travel and tourism sector.
