President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned to Malé after concluding an official visit to Bangladesh, where he attended the swearing-in ceremony of the country’s new government.
The President travelled to Dhaka at the invitation of Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh, to participate in the oath-taking ceremony held on 17 February 2026. The visit placed the Maldives among the regional partners present during the political transition in Dhaka.
During his time in Bangladesh, President Muizzu held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Discussions focused on the longstanding relationship between the two countries, with both sides reiterating their intention to maintain and strengthen cooperation.
Bangladesh remains a key partner for the Maldives, particularly in areas such as labour, trade and people-to-people ties. Thousands of Bangladeshi nationals live and work in the Maldives, forming one of the largest expatriate communities in the country.
The visit marked President Muizzu’s first official trip to Bangladesh since assuming office in November 2023.
