Maldives and India Reaffirm Parliamentary Ties on Sidelines of CSPOC

The Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of India’s Lok Sabha, Om Birla, during an official visit to New Delhi.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC). During the discussion, Speaker Abdul Raheem commended India for the arrangements for the conference, noting that the planning and execution reflected the Lok Sabha’s commitment to promoting parliamentary dialogue and cooperation across the Commonwealth.

Talks also focused on the longstanding relationship between the Maldives and India. Speaker Abdul Raheem highlighted the shared democratic values that underpin bilateral ties and stressed the importance of further strengthening relations between the two parliaments. He described inter-parliamentary engagement as an important component of the broader partnership between the two countries.

The Maldivian Speaker expressed appreciation for the training and capacity-building programmes provided to staff of the People’s Majlis Secretariat under an existing memorandum of understanding between the two legislatures. He noted the benefits of these initiatives and discussed ways to further institutionalise parliamentary cooperation to reinforce the current framework of collaboration.

In response, Speaker Om Birla highlighted the role of parliamentary engagement in supporting bilateral relations and reiterated a shared commitment to enhancing cooperation between the two democratic institutions.

The meeting reaffirmed the close and evolving partnership between Malé and New Delhi, based on sustained dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to parliamentary democracy.
