Maldives and IRENA Hold Talks on Renewable Energy Cooperation

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the International Renewable Energy Agency held discussions on environmental protection and the development of renewable energy in the Maldives during a meeting in Abu Dhabi.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim and IRENA Director General Francesco La Camera. Talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations and reviewing ongoing cooperation in the energy sector.

Both sides discussed shared priorities related to environmental protection and the promotion of renewable energy, while identifying potential areas for deeper collaboration. The discussions also included exchanges on the possibility of implementing joint programmes to support renewable energy development in the Maldives.

The government has been working to strengthen the national energy sector as part of broader efforts to build an environmentally friendly society. Expanding the use of renewable energy remains a key focus of this strategy.

As part of its targets, the government aims to generate 33 percent of the country’s electricity from renewable energy sources by 2028.
