Maldives and Oman Discuss Trade, Energy and Maritime Cooperation

Economic ties between the Maldives and the Sultanate of Oman came under review following a meeting between Maldives’ Minister of Finance and Planning, Moosa Zameer, and Oman’s Minister of Finance, Sultan bin Salim bin Said Al Habsi, during an official visit to Oman.

The discussions centred on strengthening bilateral trade and widening economic cooperation, with a focus on areas where both countries see complementary strengths. Particular attention was given to maritime and fisheries related industries, including maritime services, value chains, and associated commercial activities that could support higher trade flows.

Energy cooperation also featured in the talks, with the Ministers exploring potential partnerships linked to energy projects in the Maldives. These discussions were framed around supporting national development priorities and creating opportunities for project based collaboration.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation across a broader range of economic sectors where mutual interests align. The meeting also acknowledged the long standing trade relationship between the two countries, with Oman remaining the Maldives’ largest trading partner, largely driven by fuel imports.

The Ministry of Finance and Planning said engagements with Oman will continue, with an emphasis on advancing shared priorities and strengthening trade, investment, and cooperation on future projects.
