Maldives and USAID Discuss Enhanced Cooperation During Minister Zameer’s U.S. Visit

The Maldives and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing existing cooperation as part of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer’s ongoing visit to the United States.

During his visit, Minister Zameer met with the Administrator of USAID, Samantha Power. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the productive meeting involved discussions on strengthening current collaborations and exploring future endeavours. Minister Zameer expressed his gratitude for the ongoing support provided by USAID.

Minister Zameer is currently in Washington, D.C. As part of his agenda, he will also meet with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and the United States. Additionally, Minister Zameer will participate in an interactive session at the prestigious Council of Foreign Relations, fostering dialogue on key issues.

Engagements with the Maldivian community in Washington, D.C. are also on Minister Zameer’s itinerary, aimed at reinforcing ties with expatriates.

Following his engagements in Washington, Minister Zameer will travel to New York City, where he will meet with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua. These discussions are expected to bolster the Maldives’ collaboration with the UN on various global and regional issues.

In New York, Minister Zameer will also meet with local tour operators and travel advisors to promote tourism to the Maldives. Furthermore, he plans to connect with the Maldivian communities in New York and New Jersey to discuss their concerns and strengthen community relations.

The official visit, which began on 24th June, aims to reinforce the Maldives-US partnership and reaffirm the Maldives’ commitment to multilateralism through high-level meetings with senior US government and United Nations officials. Minister Zameer’s visit is scheduled to conclude on 27th June.

Accompanying Minister Zameer on this official visit are Dr. Hala Hameed, Secretary for Bilateral Affairs, and Senior Undersecretary Hassan Hussain Shihab. Their participation underscores the importance of this diplomatic mission and the collective effort to enhance international cooperation.
