An old Dornier 228 aircraft that once belonged to Air Maldives has been submerged near Kudagiri Picnic Island to create a new dive site. The site, known as the ‘Dornier Wreck,’ is intended to enhance marine tourism in the area.
The Housing Development Corporation (HDC), in collaboration with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), worked together to bring this project to life. MTCC’s landing craft was used to carefully submerge the plane, ensuring its placement in the designated dive site.
The Dornier 228 is one of the first aircraft purchased by Air Maldives, marking this project as a symbolic tribute to the country’s aviation history. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable tourism and provide unique experiences for divers exploring the Maldives’ marine environment.
Kudagiri Picnic Island, established as a recreational spot for residents in the Greater Malé area since 2023, is expected to benefit from this new attraction as it draws both locals and tourists alike.
