The Maldives’ long-awaited construction waste disposal system is expected to be completed by July this year, according to Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim.
The need for a dedicated system to manage construction waste has grown significantly as construction activity continues to increase. While waste management has been a focus for the government, existing laws have not adequately addressed the disposal of construction waste.
To address this, a construction waste demolition plant is currently being developed. Once operational, the plant will enable construction waste to be transported to Thilafushi for proper disposal. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve waste management in the Greater Malé area and reduce the environmental risks associated with dumping waste into the sea.
In addition to the construction waste system, a waste-to-energy plant is also under development. This facility is expected to be completed and brought into operation next year, contributing to improved waste management by converting waste into usable energy.
