Maldives Expands Global Ties with New Visa Exemption Deal with Dominica

The Maldives and the Commonwealth of Dominica have signed a bilateral visa waiver agreement allowing nationals of both countries to travel visa-free for stays of up to 30 days.

The agreement was signed in New York at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations. Representing the Maldives was Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, while Dominica was represented by its Permanent Representative, Philbert Aaron.

According to the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this visa exemption deal is part of the government’s broader efforts to foster stronger diplomatic ties and create avenues for increased travel, cultural understanding, and cooperation with countries around the world.

The agreement with Dominica adds to a growing list of countries Maldivians can travel to without a visa. As of now, Maldivian passport holders enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 90 countries and territories, including key regional partners such as India, Sri Lanka, and Singapore, as well as other small island nations and Caribbean states. This number includes countries with bilateral exemptions and those that grant e-visas or visas on arrival.

Officials noted that this latest agreement reflects a shared commitment between the Maldives and Dominica to expand people-to-people connections and deepen multilateral ties, especially through the United Nations and other international platforms where both countries maintain active participation.

While the travel volume between the Maldives and Dominica may currently be modest, the move is expected to encourage educational, cultural, and tourism exchanges over time.
