Maldives Eyes Estonia’s Expertise in Digital Governance and E-Health

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to Estonia continues to spotlight collaboration in digital governance, healthcare, and international relations. During his visit to Tallinn, the President and his delegation explored Estonia’s digital transformation journey, focusing on innovations that have redefined governance and public services.

At the e-Estonia Briefing Centre, President Muizzu was welcomed by Triin Joasaare and Joonas Vänto, who presented Estonia’s digital success, including systems like e-residency, digital ID, and secure data exchanges. This served as a foundation for discussions on adopting similar systems in the Maldives.

President Muizzu participated in a roundtable discussion with Estonia’s Digital Advisory Council. Sharing his vision for a digital Maldives, he highlighted the importance of accessibility and resilience in public services. Discussions delved into adapting Estonia’s approaches to suit the Maldives, particularly in empowering local governments and addressing the challenges of service delivery across its dispersed islands.

Estonia’s advisory council stressed the role of private-sector partnerships and early STEM education in fostering innovation. They also expressed readiness to share expertise with the Maldives.

Collaboration in Healthcare

Estonia’s Minister of Health, Riina Sikkut, met with President Muizzu to discuss digital healthcare advancements. The meeting explored Estonia’s approach to improving healthcare accessibility and efficiency. President Muizzu expressed a commitment to bridging gaps in the Maldives’ healthcare system, particularly for remote islands, through digital solutions.

Strengthening Diplomatic Ties

In a courtesy call by Jonatan Vseviov, Secretary General of Estonia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions covered enhancing bilateral relations, tackling climate change, and improving the Maldives’ access to EU fisheries markets. President Muizzu emphasised the Maldives’ commitment to climate justice and sustainable development, while Vseviov assured Estonia’s support in navigating EU trade challenges.

Key Agreements Signed

The visit also marked the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to formalise cooperation in political consultation and digital affairs. These agreements aim to strengthen governance, cybersecurity, and public service delivery in the Maldives.

As part of the visit, President Muizzu toured the PoCo Pop And Contemporary Art Museum, where Estonian IT expert Linnar Viik provided insights into the museum’s collection.

President Muizzu’s engagement with Estonian leaders underscores a shared commitment to innovation and cooperation, paving the way for a more digitally connected and sustainable Maldives.
