The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has stated that the Maldivian government is committed to supporting local businesses in attracting and establishing international brands in the country, according to state media.
His remarks were made following the opening of the first outlet in Malé of Havaianas, the globally recognised Brazilian flip-flop brand. Minister Saeed highlighted the importance of encouraging more international franchises to enter the Maldivian market and expressed that the government is ready to assist local partners in doing so.
He noted that the presence of well-known global brands not only offers more choices for consumers but also adds value to the overall tourist experience. With thousands of visitors arriving each day, the inclusion of familiar international labels is seen as a positive step toward aligning the Maldives’ retail sector with global standards.
State media reported that the Minister stressed the economic advantages of attracting foreign franchises, especially through partnerships with local entrepreneurs. He said the government would provide the necessary legal and technical support to facilitate these efforts, in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader economic vision.
The entry of international brands is also expected to generate new opportunities for local business development, stimulate competition, and improve consumer access to quality products. Minister Saeed reaffirmed that the administration will prioritise such collaborations despite broader economic challenges.
