Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib and the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, G Balasubramanian, have discussed expediting the progress of the Thilamale’ Bridge project, the largest infrastructure initiative currently underway in the country.
The project, valued at USD 500 million, is funded through a USD 100 million grant from the Indian government, a USD 400 million line of credit, and contributions from the Maldivian government. Spanning a total of 6.7km, the bridge aims to enhance connectivity in the Greater Malé Region, linking Malé, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi.
According to the project’s timeline, the segment connecting Malé and Gulhifalhu is scheduled for completion by 31 March 2026, while the Gulhifalhu-Thilafushi section is expected to be finished by 30 September 2026. The overall project is also set to conclude by the same date.
During a courtesy meeting between Minister Muththalib and High Commissioner Balasubramanian, discussions focused on Indian-assisted development projects in the Maldives, with particular emphasis on the Thilamale’ Bridge. The two officials also explored avenues for further collaboration in the country’s infrastructure sector.
As of November last year, 46.58 percent of the bridge construction had been completed. While the Maldivian government previously raised concerns over delays in the project, it has since stated that progress had accelerated following discussions with Indian authorities.
Once completed, the Thilamale’ Bridge is expected to bring significant economic and social benefits to the Maldives, improving transport efficiency and fostering development across the region.
