Running from 14 to 16 December 2024, the programme aims to equip women entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge needed to leverage digital tools, enabling them to grow their businesses and contribute to the economy.

This landmark event focuses on addressing the systemic barriers women face in accessing resources and opportunities. The opening session featured remarks from key figures, including the Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr. Aishath Shiham, who outlined the government’s commitment to empowering women entrepreneurs through initiatives like this workshop.

A Transformative Vision for Women Entrepreneurs

In her keynote address, Dr. Aishath Shiham highlighted the importance of fostering equal opportunities for women in the workforce. She described the workshop as a transformative initiative aligned with the government’s goal of advancing women’s economic empowerment. “Women’s economic empowerment is a top priority for the Government of Maldives. When women thrive, communities thrive, and the economy becomes stronger,” she stated, underscoring the government’s belief in the far-reaching benefits of gender-inclusive policies.

Dr. Shiham also announced progress in improving access to financial resources for women entrepreneurs. She revealed that the government has allocated MVR 100 million in loans for women-led startups and businesses, with 25% of the fund reserved for women with disabilities. Sixty applicants have already been selected for funding this year, reflecting the government’s proactive measures to support entrepreneurship.

Harnessing the Power of Digital Technology

The minister emphasised the importance of digital literacy for economic resilience. “In today’s world, digital technology is no longer optional; it is essential. This programme is about more than just training; it’s about transformation,” she noted. She explained that equipping women with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the digital economy would inspire broader innovation and inclusivity, strengthening the national economy in the process.

The initiative aims to empower 100 women entrepreneurs to integrate digital solutions into their businesses, creating a ripple effect of positive change in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

A Collaborative Effort

Dr. Shiham thanked the Ministry staff, APCICT, and BCC for their dedication in making the initiative possible. She acknowledged the hard work of trainers and facilitators in equipping participants with the tools needed to embrace the digital economy.

“This programme represents a collective effort to build an environment where women entrepreneurs can thrive, innovate, and lead,” she concluded, encouraging participants to seize this opportunity to transform their businesses and inspire others.

As the workshop continues over the next two days, it sets a strong precedent for future initiatives focused on gender equality and digital transformation, reinforcing the government’s commitment to creating a more inclusive economy.
