The Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, has reaffirmed the Maldives’ firm commitment to protecting workers’ rights, promoting social justice, and fostering a sustainable and inclusive labour market.
Speaking at the 113th International Labour Organization (ILO) Conference, Dr Haidar outlined the government’s continued efforts to align national policies with the ILO’s core objectives. He emphasised that investing in people, strengthening institutions, and upholding the social contract remain central to the country’s vision for decent work and shared prosperity.
Highlighting recent progress, the Minister pointed to the enactment of the Workplace Safety and Health Protection Act as a key milestone. He said the legislation reflected the government’s dedication to building a safe, dignified, and equitable working environment. According to Dr Haidar, the health and safety of workers are directly linked to national development and long-term economic growth.
The Minister also noted that the Maldives has joined the ILO’s Global Coalition for Social Justice, reinforcing its commitment to collaborate with other countries in safeguarding workers’ rights. He said the government is actively engaging with both employers and workers to address various challenges within the labour sector.
Dr Haidar stressed the importance of ensuring that individuals who receive government-funded vocational and technical training contribute meaningfully to national development. He described this approach as essential to strengthening the workforce and achieving broader developmental goals.
In closing, the Minister expressed appreciation for the ILO’s work in promoting social justice and safer working conditions. He called on all member states to work collectively in protecting workers’ rights and ensuring equitable, respectful, and secure employment environments.
