Maldives Seeks Closer Alignment with China in Message Marking Lunar New Year

On the occasion of the Chinese New Year, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu emphasised the Maldives’ commitment to fortifying ties with the People’s Republic of China, highlighting the importance of the China-Maldives Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership. This partnership, which serves as a cornerstone of bilateral relations, reflects decades of collaboration in areas such as infrastructure, trade, and cultural exchange.

In messages addressed to Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, President Muizzu reiterated the Maldives’ support for the One-China Principle, a key aspect of the relationship between the two nations. He also expressed the Maldives’ intention to enhance cooperation for the mutual benefit of both countries, stressing that strong bilateral ties are vital for the progress and prosperity of their peoples.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China were established on 14th October 1972, and over the years, the partnership has flourished. China’s support for Maldivian infrastructure projects, including the landmark Sinamale’ Bridge, and its investment in tourism and renewable energy, have played a significant role in the Maldives’ economic development. Additionally, the Maldives has been a participant in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, leveraging this framework for infrastructural and economic growth.

President Muizzu’s administration has made it clear that the Maldives intends to continue fostering closer ties with China. This includes exploring new avenues for cooperation, such as renewable energy, climate resilience, and sustainable tourism, while ensuring that the foundations of the partnership remain strong.

In his official message on the social media platform ‘X,’ President Muizzu extended warm wishes to the leadership and people of China, reaffirming his administration’s dedication to ensuring the flourishing of the longstanding friendship.

As the Maldives charts its path forward in foreign relations, its partnership with China remains a key pillar, balancing economic cooperation and mutual respect to achieve shared development goals.
