Maldives Signs MoU with Chinese Institute to Advance Aquaculture

The Maldives has entered into a new partnership with China aimed at strengthening aquaculture research and development. An MoU was signed between the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) and the Fujian Fisheries Research Institute of the People’s Republic of China during the visit of Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam to China.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the MMRI by Director General Mohamed Shimal. It focuses on conducting research to support the development of aquaculture, facilitating the transfer of advanced technology, and introducing practices that safeguard the sustainability of marine ecosystems.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, the collaboration will allow both sides to work closely on identifying sustainable methods of aquaculture while encouraging innovation through modern technology. Officials noted that the arrangement is expected to enhance scientific and technical cooperation, enabling the Maldives to make more sustainable use of its marine resources.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to expand and diversify the fishing industry, recognising the importance of utilising the country’s ocean-based resources. With around 99 percent of the Maldives’ territory consisting of the sea, officials have said aquaculture holds significant potential for long-term economic and environmental benefits.
