Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed has officially assumed her role as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the World Trade Organization (WTO), following the presentation of her Letter of Credence to WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in a formal ceremony held at the organisation’s headquarters in Geneva.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed conveyed greetings from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to the rules-based multilateral trading system. She also expressed the government’s appreciation for the WTO’s continued support and technical assistance, and highlighted the Maldives’ intention to further strengthen cooperation with the organisation.
The WTO Director-General welcomed the Ambassador and reiterated the organisation’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Maldives in achieving its development objectives.
The Maldives has been a member of the World Trade Organization since 31 May 1995 and was previously a signatory to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) since 19 April 1993. As an active member of the WTO, the Maldives engages in global trade negotiations and benefits from technical cooperation aimed at strengthening trade capacity and integration into the global economy.
Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed was accompanied by Mr. Mohamed Raaidh Saeedh, Attaché at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations Offices and Other International Organizations in Geneva.
