Maldives Stresses Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence at UN Security Council

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel addressed the United Nations Security Council’s High-Level Open Debate on Artificial Intelligence and International Peace and Security on Friday.

The session, held under the Presidency of the Republic of Korea, focused on the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence in maintaining global peace and security.

In his remarks, Minister Khaleel said artificial intelligence represents a shift in the global power balance, noting that access to computing capacity can empower even the smallest nations. He highlighted its potential in areas such as climate resilience, education, health care, and economic diversification, while also cautioning against risks including surveillance, repression, and the acceleration of armed conflict.

For Small Island Developing States, he said, artificial intelligence is not an abstract option but an essential tool for survival and prosperity. Referring to the Maldives’ national digital transformation strategy, Maldives 2.0, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to placing people at the centre of innovation and development.

The Minister concluded by calling on UN Member States to ensure that artificial intelligence is harnessed as a force for peace, equity, and human dignity.
