The government has announced plans to introduce green licence plates for environmentally friendly vehicles as part of broader efforts to promote sustainable transportation in the Maldives.
Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Ameen confirmed the initiative, describing it as the first time such a system will be introduced in the country. The new licence plates are intended to make electric and eco-friendly vehicles easily identifiable on the road.
Under the new system, private electric vehicles will carry green plates with white lettering, while electric taxis will use green plates with yellow lettering. The design distinguishes electric vehicles from the existing colour-coded system used for different vehicle categories in the Maldives.
Minister Ameen shared a preview of the proposed plates on social media and called for public support for the transition toward cleaner transport options.
The initiative comes as the government promotes a shift toward greener transportation in line with broader environmental commitments. These include pledges made ahead of the upcoming COP29 climate summit and the administration’s stated goal of expanding sustainable mobility in the country.
At present, the Maldives uses black licence plates for private vehicles, yellow plates for taxis, white plates for military vehicles, and blue plates for diplomatic vehicles.
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation is also preparing to introduce a fully electric taxi service as part of the transition. Authorities say 150 electric vehicles are expected to be imported for this programme.
