The national airline, Maldivian, marks a significant milestone as it celebrated ten years of uninterrupted seaplane operations across the country last Friday. Since its inception in 2014 with just two aircraft, the seaplane fleet has grown considerably, playing a crucial role in strengthening the Maldives’ tourism industry.
The 10th-anniversary celebration highlights not just the airline’s success but also the crucial role seaplanes have played in enhancing the accessibility of the Maldives’ remote and luxurious resorts. Seaplanes have become an iconic part of the Maldivian travel experience, providing seamless connections between Velana International Airport (VIA) and various destinations across the archipelago.
Maldivian’s commitment to exceptional service and reliable connectivity has been instrumental in making the Maldives more accessible to travellers. The airline’s seaplane operations have significantly contributed to the tourism sector, which is a cornerstone of the nation’s economy.
Seaplane operations in the Maldives began in earnest in the late 1980s with the establishment of Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA). Initially starting as a helicopter service, TMA transitioned to seaplanes in 1997 due to their practicality and efficiency in navigating the numerous islands of the Maldives. Today, TMA operates the largest seaplane fleet in the world, with over 65 aircraft, transporting close to a million passengers annually.
Seaplanes have revolutionised travel in the Maldives, making it possible to reach even the most remote and pristine islands quickly and comfortably. This transformation has been crucial in the development and success of the Maldivian tourism industry, allowing for the proliferation of luxury resorts across the archipelago.
