Maldivian has moved to strengthen its position in one of its fastest-growing tourism markets by appointing MEGACAP Aviation Services Ltd as its General Sales Agent in China, signalling a renewed focus on capturing demand from Chinese travellers.
The decision reflects the continued importance of China as a source market for the Maldives. Tourist arrivals from China have risen sharply, with more than 329,000 visitors recorded last year, representing a 25% increase. The market currently accounts for the largest share of total arrivals, and early figures for this year suggest that momentum is holding, with Chinese travellers making up over 15% of arrivals by mid-March.
By partnering with a China-based aviation services firm, Maldivian is seeking to strengthen its commercial reach within the country, particularly through closer engagement with travel agencies and tour operators. The move is expected to improve the airline’s market visibility and support efforts to convert rising demand into sustained passenger growth.
Maldivian currently operates weekly flights between Malé and destinations in China using its A330-200 aircraft. These routes, introduced in early 2025, form part of a broader strategy to expand long-haul connectivity while feeding international passengers into the airline’s domestic network.
That domestic network remains a key part of the airline’s proposition. With the largest internal network in the country, Maldivian links international arrivals to resorts, local islands and other tourism segments, allowing the airline to capture value beyond the initial inbound journey.
The appointment also points to a wider shift in how airlines serving the Maldives are approaching key markets. Rather than relying solely on route expansion, carriers are increasingly investing in on-the-ground commercial partnerships to build distribution channels and stabilise demand across seasons.
Maldivian’s management has indicated that China will remain central to its international strategy, particularly as outbound travel from the country continues to recover and expand. The collaboration with Megacap is expected to play a role in translating that demand into sustained traffic flows to the Maldives.
