Maldivian Launches A330 Operations with New Direct Routes to China

Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has officially announced the launch of its A330-200 wide-body aircraft operations, with new direct flights to Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu starting in January 2025. The announcement was made during an exclusive launch event held in Beijing, attended by key stakeholders from the Maldives and China, including Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Capt. Mohamed Ameen.

The event marked a significant milestone in strengthening the connectivity between the two countries, with China being a major tourism market for the Maldives. The new routes are expected to enhance tourism and business travel while fostering closer ties between the two nations.

Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas highlighted the enhanced onboard experience tailored for Chinese travellers, including Mandarin-speaking crew and personalised catering. The A330-200 aircraft, equipped for long-haul flights, will increase passenger capacity and provide greater efficiency and comfort.

Currently, Maldivian operates a fleet of 24 aircraft, including one A320, eight Dash 8 aircraft, eleven DHC-6 Twin Otters, and four ATRs. With the addition of the A330-200, the airline is positioning itself to meet the rising demand for travel between the Maldives and key global destinations.

The launch highlights Maldivian’s commitment to expanding its international reach and boosting the Maldives’ position as a top destination for global travellers. The direct routes to China are set to play a significant role in driving tourism and business collaboration between the two countries.
