Maldivian Reduces FIT Fares to Support Local Tourism

Maldivian, the national airline, has announced a reduction in Free Independent Traveler (FIT) fares as part of efforts to strengthen local tourism. The initiative, unveiled on 1 September, delivers an average 15 percent reduction in fares and is aligned with a presidential pledge to make domestic travel more affordable. The reduced fares will be available for purchase starting 1 September, for travel commencing 1 November 2025.

The move is expected to encourage more travellers to explore islands beyond the traditional resort market, stimulating economic benefits for communities across the archipelago.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to supporting local tourism while delivering greater value for our passengers,” said Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director at Maldivian. “As the gateway to the Maldives’ islands, Maldivian takes pride in connecting travellers to the heart of our local communities. By introducing more affordable fares and expanding accessibility, we are helping to spread the benefits of tourism more widely across the country.”

Alongside the new fare reductions, Maldivian already provides special corporate rates for local tourism establishments, including resorts and guesthouses, in order to support the sector’s growth.

With the largest domestic network in the country, the airline operates flights to 17 destinations, linking the northernmost atolls to the southernmost. This connectivity allows FITs to access some of the Maldives’ most scenic and culturally rich islands.

Tickets for FITs are available through Maldivian’s website, mobile application, email, select online travel agencies and passenger sales agents.
