Maldivian Welcomes Fifth ATR Aircraft as Part of Fleet Expansion and Modernisation

Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has added a fifth ATR aircraft to its growing fleet, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing domestic connectivity and modernising operations. The new addition, a 46-seat ATR 42-600, arrived in the Maldives at 4:00 PM on Saturday.

The aircraft marked its arrival with a ceremonial low pass over the runway before landing at Velana International Airport, where it was welcomed with a traditional water salute.

To commemorate the milestone, a special ceremony was held at Velana International Airport. Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, served as the chief guest. The event was also attended by Maldivian’s Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas, along with senior officials from Island Aviation Services Limited, Maldives Airports Company Limited, and Maldives Immigration.

Minister Thoriq Ibrahim emphasised the importance of the fleet expansion, stating that the addition of the fifth ATR aircraft will boost domestic air connectivity and facilitate easier travel for both locals and tourists.

Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, noted the aircraft’s arrival as a significant step in the national airline’s fleet modernisation programme. He highlighted that the second wide-body operation is progressing well, in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to advance the nation’s aviation sector.

The government continues to pursue plans to broaden Maldivian’s network to new international destinations.
