Millions in Unpaid Rent for Hulhumalé Social Housing, Says HDC

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has disclosed that millions of Maldivian Rufiyaa remain unpaid by tenants occupying social housing units in Hulhumalé, posing challenges to the corporation’s operational capacity.

According to HDC, all social housing units under its management—comprising units in Phase I of Hulhumalé and the Hiyaa Towers in Phase II—are subject to monthly rental payments. The total number of these units stands at 8,511. The corporation further revealed that the highest outstanding rent from a single unit has reached MVR 1,115,769.73.

Despite the government’s recent decision to reduce rent across all apartments in Phase I, and an additional 20 percent discount applied to social housing units within the same phase, HDC noted a persistent trend of non-compliance among tenants in fulfilling their payment obligations after assuming occupancy.

The corporation emphasized that this widespread issue of rent arrears is significantly hindering its ability to maintain and deliver essential services. HDC added that measures are currently being undertaken to address and resolve the matter.
