Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has highlighted the need to expand local tourism in the northern Maldives to ensure the successful development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport.

Speaking at a ceremony in Filladhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, the Minister addressed the introduction of the Bank of Maldives (BML)’s Guesthouse Financing scheme, which is designed to promote local tourism in the atoll.

The Minister described the newly launched loan scheme as a valuable initiative that would help strengthen tourism opportunities in the region. He also noted that increasing the availability of tourist beds in the area is crucial for the viability of Hanimaadhoo International Airport once the project is completed.

“The Hanimaadhoo International Airport will be completed soon. In addition to resorts, local tourism must be expanded in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani Atolls, as more tourism beds are essential to ensure that the airport is viable,” he said.

The Minister also stated that the government is prioritising the expansion of local tourism across the country. While BML’s guesthouse financing scheme will be available nationwide, he encouraged businesses in the region to make use of the opportunity to support their growth.
