Maldives Inland Revenue Authority presented the country’s experience in integrating artificial intelligence into tax administration at an international tax technology conference held in Vienna earlier this month.
Commissioner General of Taxation Hassan Zareer and Chief Technology Officer Mohamed Najiz represented the Maldives at the WU Tax Technology Conference on Large Language Model Agents for Tax Law Technology, held from 9 to 10 February 2026 in Austria. The event brought together tax professionals, academics and technology specialists to examine how emerging technologies are reshaping tax and customs systems.
Maldives participated in a panel discussion focused on recent developments in generative AI for tax and customs. During the session, Maldivian representatives highlighted how artificial intelligence can play a transformative role in smaller tax administrations, where resource constraints often require more efficient and targeted approaches to compliance and enforcement.
The participation reflects MIRA’s broader efforts to modernise tax administration through digital tools and automation, as governments increasingly explore AI-driven systems to improve accuracy, reduce processing times and enhance taxpayer services.
