The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has officially become a member of the Belt and Road Initiative Tax Administration Cooperation Mechanism (BRITACOM) following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU was signed by Commissioner General of Taxation Hassan Zareer on 24th September during the 5th Belt and Road Initiative Tax Cooperation Forum, held in Hong Kong.
In his remarks at the signing ceremony, Commissioner Zareer highlighted the significance of MIRA’s participation in BRITACOM, noting that this collaboration will allow for greater engagement among tax authorities across the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) region. He emphasised the importance of joint efforts in addressing common challenges, and stressed that enhanced regional and international cooperation is crucial to building strong and resilient tax systems.
Through its membership in BRITACOM, MIRA aims to strengthen its tax administration capabilities, leveraging the platform’s resources to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Commissioner Zareer noted that this collaboration provides MIRA with opportunities to benefit from technical support, which is critical for addressing the evolving demands of modern tax administration.
Established to foster cooperation between tax authorities within the BRI region, BRITACOM offers a variety of benefits to its members, including access to training programmes, discussion forums, and knowledge-sharing opportunities with more developed countries. These resources are expected to further enhance MIRA’s operations as it seeks to improve tax collection and administration practices in the Maldives.
MIRA’s involvement in BRITACOM marks an important step in expanding its international partnerships and reflects the authority’s commitment to adopting global best practices in tax administration.
