MPL CEO Highlights Success of Sea-to-Air Cargo Service

The Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, has announced the success of the company’s sea-to-air cargo service, with approximately 12 containers of cargo being shipped to European countries each month.

In an interview with state media, CEO Wajeeh detailed MPL’s efforts to boost revenue through the expansion of the maritime sector. He noted that the sea-to-air cargo service was launched as part of MPL’s broader strategy to diversify its operations and enhance the country’s logistics capabilities. The service has particularly thrived in the transshipment of garments from Bangladesh to Europe, marking significant growth in this emerging industry.

The cargo is initially transported in containers to Sri Lanka, from where it is flown to various destinations across Europe and other parts of the world. This hybrid model of cargo transport has proven effective, with Wajeeh confirming that around 12 containers are now shipped to Europe every month. He also indicated that discussions are underway to further expand the service, highlighting its potential to contribute even more to the Maldivian economy.

The sea-to-air cargo transshipment services represent a collaborative effort between MPL, Maldives State Shipping (MSS), Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), and international airlines. This initiative aims to improve the cargo handling capabilities of the Maldives, diversify the economy, and offer businesses in the region faster and more efficient freight services.
