Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has partnered with the Ihavandhoo Island Council to establish a dockyard in Haa Alifu Atoll, marking a significant step towards enhancing maritime support services in the region.
The agreement was formalised with signatures from MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim and Ihavandhoo Council President Ahmed Sobah. Speaking at the signing ceremony, CEO Wajeeh stated that the project aims to begin construction early next year on a 100,000-acre plot of land allocated for the facility.
The dockyard is intended to address the growing demand for technical support services in the region. According to Wajeeh, since the introduction of bunkering services under the current administration, international vessels traversing the region have frequently sought assistance for technical repairs and maintenance.
In addition to serving foreign vessels, the dockyard will cater to the needs of local fishing vessels operating in the region. Wajeeh highlighted the facility’s potential to provide much-needed docking services for fishermen, further supporting the nation’s vital fishing industry.
MPL aims to complete the dockyard within six months, reflecting the urgency of providing these critical services to the maritime sector.
