Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced plans to develop cruise terminals at four strategic locations as part of its masterplan, aiming to enhance the Maldives’ cruise tourism infrastructure.
Speaking on state media, MPL’s Research and Development Consultant, Anil Adam, revealed that feasibility studies are currently underway in collaboration with a Greek consultant to assess the viability of the project. The initiative will proceed following consultations with industry experts.
The proposed cruise terminals are planned for Uligan in Haa Alif Atoll, Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll, and Hithadhoo in Addu City. Additionally, MPL intends to repurpose land in Thilafushi, Kaafu Atoll, for tourism development, including a cruise terminal, after relocating the commercial port currently located there.
Anil noted that discussions regarding the project have been held with the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure. Moreover, MPL has already signed an agreement with the Uligan Island Council for the development of the terminal in Uligan.
With the Maldives experiencing an influx of cruise ship visitors during the peak tourism season, the initiative is expected to address current limitations, where large vessels are docked near Malé City or anchored outside island lagoons. The development of dedicated terminals is anticipated to enhance the visitor experience and strengthen the Maldives’ position as a cruise tourism destination.
This project marks a significant step in MPL’s efforts to support the growth of the tourism industry while contributing to the broader economic development of the Maldives.
