A series of leadership changes across state-owned enterprises has continued, with Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Managing Director Abdul Matheen announcing his resignation yesterday.
Matheen confirmed his departure in a social media post, stating that the resignation took effect immediately. No reason was provided for the decision.
His exit coincided with the resignation of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) Managing Director Farhath Shaheer on the same day, adding to a growing list of recent leadership changes across key state entities.
Over the past two weeks, the heads of Fenaka Corporation and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) have also stepped down. In addition, several senior positions at Fenaka and Housing Development Corporation (HDC) have seen changes, indicating a broader reshuffle within state-owned enterprises.
The clustering of these departures follows a period of political setback for the government, including losses in the Local Council Elections and the outcome of a public referendum held earlier this month. In that vote, a majority of citizens rejected a proposal to align parliamentary and presidential elections.
While leadership transitions are not uncommon within state-owned enterprises, the pace and concentration of recent changes raise questions about continuity and operational stability. Frequent turnover at the senior level can disrupt ongoing projects and strategic direction, particularly in sectors that rely on long-term planning and technical execution.
At the same time, it remains unclear whether these changes are part of a coordinated restructuring effort or a reactive response to broader political developments. The effectiveness of rapid leadership turnover in improving institutional performance is uncertain, especially in the absence of clearly articulated reform priorities or timelines.
The recent pattern suggests a period of adjustment within several major state-owned companies, with potential implications for governance, service delivery, and investor confidence.
