The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has announced the registration of 200 fishing vessels in the newly established National Registry of Fishermen. The registry aims to ensure that fishermen and those engaged in the fisheries sector receive governmental recognition similar to other professions.
In an interview with state media PSM, Dr Hussain Sinan, Director General of the Fisheries Ministry, emphasised the ministry’s goal to register all active fishing vessels. Efforts are currently underway to facilitate the fisher community’s access to banking services, enabling them to benefit from loans for various purposes and other government services. Dr. Sinan noted that individuals listed in the registry are eligible to apply for government-provided loans.
The establishment of the registry is also seen as a strategic move to reduce the number of foreign workers in the fishing industry, thereby decreasing the outflow of currency. The ministry is confident that this initiative will support the local fishing community and bolster the national economy.
Furthermore, the registry will help maintain meticulous records of various fishing activities, including reef fishing, recreational fishing, and sports fishing. This comprehensive documentation is expected to enhance the management and sustainability of the Maldives’ fishing industry.
The creation of the National Registry of Fishermen aims to acknowledge and support the fishing community’s significant role in the nation’s economy. The ministry hopes that this initiative will foster more organised and beneficial interactions between fishermen and government services.
