The government has launched a new initiative to explore potential partnerships with tourist resorts to strengthen the local agricultural sector. As part of this effort, a team from the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, led by Minister Dr Maryam Mariya, visited Crossroads Maldives on Sunday to study its farming techniques and plant maintenance methods.
Many resorts across the Maldives have invested in cultivating a variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs to supply their kitchens. The Ministry stated that the purpose of the visit was to identify ways to enhance cooperation between the government and resorts to support local food production. During the visit, Minister Dr Mariya examined the techniques used by Crossroads Maldives to grow its own produce and maintain the island’s greenery.
According to the Ministry, the visit showcased the resort’s sustainable and innovative approaches to food production. The government recognises that resorts can play a crucial role in supporting agriculture in the Maldives, whether by increasing the sourcing of locally grown produce, investing in hydroponic farming, or sharing farming expertise with local farmers.
The Ministry emphasised that strengthening these collaborations could contribute to greater local food production, promote sustainability, and reduce reliance on imported goods. The initiative is expected to benefit both the tourism industry and the wider community while laying the groundwork for improved food security in the Maldives.
